A shock to the system

Overview

The sweeping victory of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the Uttar Pradesh state elections highlights the national parties’ continuing marginalisation in India’s largest state. The outcome shows how difficult it is for national parties – principally, the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party – to regain lost ground and reduce the political fragmentation that has produced fractious coalitions at the centre and slowed policymaking.
