India’s armed Maoists merit more attention than they generally receive.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh describes them as the country’s single biggest internal security challenge, ahead of insurgencies in Kashmir and the northeast. Their continuing campaign of violence has the potential to affect metals and mining investments in the mineral-rich states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Orissa, where state governments have billions of dollars worth of projects in the pipeline.
