India: Bank reform hits profits – and process likely to be protracted

Overview

Indian state-run banks, which dominate their sector, are reeling under bad debt. The latest quarterly results, which showed falling profits at most public-sector banks, have resulted in a slide in their share prices. This follows the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) active push for a cleanup of the banking system: banks are now required to reclassify stressed loans as non-performing assets and to make adequate provisions.
