Overview

An aggressively anti-Muslim campaign by India’s main opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in the Uttar Pradesh state elections is a reminder that communalism remains a risk in India. Critics accuse the BJP of fomenting communal tensions with the help of its extremist affiliates when required and posing as a mainstream right-wing party at other times.
