Overview

Foreign distillers and wineries have long been excluded from India’s large alcoholic beverages market by high, discriminatory tariffs. India is the world's third-largest market for alcoholic beverages, and the largest for whisky. Complaints by the US and EU at the WTO led India in June 2007 to drop additional import duties on imported wines and spirits, raising hopes that foreign alcoholic beverage makers will be able to increase sales to this giant market.
