What the Bo Xilai verdict tells us about China’s transition

Overview

The Politburo’s condemnation of its errant member Bo Xilai was extraordinarily frank and wide-ranging when it announced his expulsion from the Communist Party last Friday. The intention was clearly to draw a line under the case as far as the Party is concerned, allowing it finally to fix the date of 8 November for its five-yearly Congress that will name the new leadership. Bo will now be handed over to the machinery of justice for trial; a guilty verdict may be confidently forecast....
