China reports terrorist base

Overview

A raid by Chinese security forces on a camp said to be occupied by terrorists linked with al-Qaeda has re-awakened the issue of fundamentalist unrest in the country's Far West. Beijing insists that this is a real danger, which could destabilise the region which has own its energy reserves and through which oil and gas pipelines run.

But others believe the allegations of terrorism are being used to justify a crackdown on the local Muslim population as China seeks to promote...
