Anxieties abate in Beijing

Overview

We have spent much of the past month in Beijing canvassing officials, businesspeople and other analysts about the state of China’s economic policy. In general, contacts agree that economic policy under Xi Jinping has often been an afterthought, as he has concentrated his time and efforts on Party-building, military reform and foreign policy. The result has been poor, confused policy that often pulls in different directions (see our 6 May note Xi Jinping’s Failed Economic Policy)....
