Labour market stability is the ultimate bottom line for the Chinese leadership – government officials have emphasized that slower growth will be tolerated if sufficient jobs are created. It is clear that the rate of GDP expansion is falling: the official print is 7 per cent in the first half of this year, down from 7.4 per cent for 2014 as a whole and 10.6 per cent in 2010.
