China goes for short-term gain at risk of long-term pain

Overview

In its new growth targets for the next five years, China’s leadership has gone for short- to medium-term results at the expense of the longer-term reforms needed to reshape the economy. This approach will limit the growth potential and poses the risk of increasing what are already significant debt levels. For all its talk of supply-side policies, the government is likely, in practice, to reduce excess capacity only gradually. Stable exchange-rate management is set to take precedence...
