Overview

Against the backdrop of surging energy demand, China plans to use more gas in its energy mix – mainly for power generation. Environmental benefits make gas preferable to coal, especially in heavily coal-polluted cities. China has embarked on an ambitious supply push. The government has built pipelines to channel supplies from geographically isolated fields to urban centres on the east and south coasts, while seeking to expand imports, both via LNG and pipelines.
