China Monitor: Gas demand flattens, with nasty implications for Russia

Overview

The government in Beijing has made clear it wants to increase the use of gas as it diversifies the country’s energy mix to reduce dependence on coal and get to grips with the life-reducing air pollution blanketing northern cities. This appeared to be good for gas exporters to the People’s Republic – above all Russia, as part of the rapprochement between Beijing and Moscow that has seen the People’s Republic became a major source of economic support in the face of Western sanctions...
