China's outbound tourist wave

Overview

Rising disposable incomes and the strength of the currency are fuelling extremely strong growth in China’s outbound tourism sector. The number of outward travellers – the majority of whom are now tourists – rose from 10 million in 2000 to 34 million in 2006. In the first quarter of 2007, this number was up 14.5 per cent year-on-year to 9.76 million.
