Overview

The dietary aspirations of Chinese as incomes rise, plus use of grain for bio-fuels, mean that the official goal of 95 per cent food self-sufficiency is coming under increasing strain. GM crops are an obvious answer. GM crop trials in China have produced positive results going beyond meeting this main objective of improved yields. The reduced need for fertilizers has been shown to boost farm incomes, limit environmental degradation and improve public health.
