China Monitor: China and the US play it cool over islands but rivalry dynamic remains

Overview

After much hemming and hawing, the US Navy (USN) this week sailed within 12 nautical miles of one of China’s newly built artificial features in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. On 27 October, a guided missile destroyer accompanied by two surveillance aircraft took a course near Subi Reef in the Spratly Islands, occupied by China since 1988 and also claimed by Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The US action was intended as an assertion of freedom of navigation but...
