Brazil: What happens if Dilma’s second term ends early?

Overview

As the country’s largest-ever corruption scandal advances under Operation Lava Jato (“Car Wash”), the odds that President Dilma Rousseff will not complete her second term continue to inch higher. This is bad news for Finance Minister Joaquim Levy’s fiscal adjustment plan, which hinges on congressional support of key government bills in order to take effect. It could also accelerate the downgrade of Brazil’s investment grade rating to junk.
