Brazil: Temer’s first steps

Overview

In a marathon 20-hour session, the Brazilian Senate this week voted to suspend President Dilma Rousseff from her duties for up to 180 days in an ongoing impeachment motion. That vote paved the way for Vice-President Michel Temer of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) on 12 May to become interim President as Dilma’s Senate trial gets underway.
