Brazil: Reading Temer’s post-local election tea leaves

Overview

Following the first round of Brazil’s municipal elections, the Temer administration finally has an opening to advance its structural reform agenda thanks to the resounding defeat of the country’s once-dominant electoral force, the Workers’ Party (PT), at the polls. We view the government’s renewed efforts to fast-track the legislative approval of its spending cap bill as encouraging and raise our odds for the passage of a less-watered-down version following Sunday’s election...
