Brazil: Ramifications of the Senate President’s court victory

Overview

The nation’s highest court (STF) on Wednesday ruled in a decisive 6-3 vote to allow President Michel Temer’s ally Senate President Renan Calheiros to remain in his post until the end of his term on 1 February 2017, even though he is currently a criminal defendant in the first of 12 criminal cases against him. Rather than remove Calheiros from his post, the STF decided instead to exclude him from the line of presidential succession....
