Brazil: Political and economic fallout from the latest phase of ‘Lava Jato’

Overview

Prosecutors in the Operation Lava Jato (“Car Wash”) kickback scheme took their investigation to a new level with the high-profile arrests of the CEOs of Brazil’s two largest and most powerful construction companies, Odebrecht and Andrade Gutierrez last week. Although these arrests and the expansion of the Lava Jato investigation into new companies and sectors are positive signs for Brazil’s fight against corruption, the timing could not have been worse for President Dilma Rousseff....
