Brazil: Pension reform clears first hurdle

Overview

After weeks of heated debate, the Lower House committee analysing the government’s ambitious pension reform plan voted to approve the base text of the bill on 3 May. Although the government achieved its goal of obtaining 23 votes in favour of the proposal (vs 14 against), the session was rife with conflict and had to be suspended three times before the text was finally approved. Moreover, the committee must still vote on proposed amendments to the reform next week....
