Brazil: A recipe for rising political instability

Overview

The Brazilian Senate this week became centre stage for a contested impeachment motion against President Dilma, after the Lower House’s sweeping passage of the motion on 17 April by a 71.5 per cent majority. Should a simple majority of senators accept the motion by mid-May, as appears likely, Dilma would be temporarily suspended from her duties for up to 180 days while her Senate trial is held; at this point, Vice-President Michel Temer of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party...
