Brazil: The fiscal abyss still looms

Overview

Notwithstanding a first-rate economic team and his pledge to put the country back on a more sustainable fiscal path, acting Brazilian President Michel Temer has continued to loosen the government purse strings in recent weeks. Since he took office on 12 May, Temer has already endorsed more than R$130 billion (2.1 per cent of GDP) in additional federal expenditures through 2018, including a greater-than-expected 12.5 per cent average hike for the recipients of the Bolsa Familia...
