Brazil’s deepening fiscal hole

Overview

Brazil’s troubling fiscal outlook was back in the spotlight this week following the Dilma administration’s admission that it would not make even its modest primary surplus target of 0.15 per cent of GDP this year. An official announcement is expected soon, but ahead of it, Presidential Chief-of-Staff Jaques Wagner said on Thursday that the central government was likely to post a primary deficit of roughly R$76 billion (US$ 19.5 billion), or more than 1.2 per cent of GDP.
