Brazil: Implications of Rio’s fiscal crisis

Overview

As the federal government – under the guiding hand of Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles – slowly inches ahead with structural reforms aimed at ensuring fiscal solvency in the future, the country’s state governments have been moving closer to the abyss. Despite the introduction in June of a federal bailout to help indebted states, the crisis is beginning to boil over in Rio de Janeiro and threatens to do so in other states too – notably, Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul....
