Brazil: Road privatisations continue to gain traction

Overview

The Brazilian government’s decision to push ahead with the privatisation of several key roads since 2007 ended the debate over whether management of highways should be transferred to the private sector. The model adopted by the federal government and the state of Sao Paulo - which grants concessions to the bidder which offers to charge the lowest toll - has made the decision to privatise more politically acceptable.
