Investors have poured into Brazil’s wind energy sector in recent months, lured by the country’s staggering potential to install over 143,000 megawatts of wind generation capacity. While costly fossil fuel imports and delays in large Brazilian hydroelectric and natural gas projects offer an opening for alternative energy, the sector’s potential is offset by higher generation costs and an industrial policy that favours imports as much as domestically produced components.
