How much longer can Brazil rule the global chicken market roost?

Overview

Brazil retained its position as the world's number one exporter of chicken meat in 2007 for the third year running, with sales abroad up 17 per cent year on year. Brazil’s export industry has benefited not only from the absence of avian influenza, but also from cheap labour and, until recently, grain prices below global levels. Higher domestic consumption due to rising household purchasing power has also helped fuel industry expansion.
